The Broken Banking System and What You Can Do About It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s banking system is a far cry from George Bailey\u2019s Bailey Building and Loan in the classic film <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"George Bailey helps Mr. Martini buy his own home\" src=\"http:\/\/reg-public.s3.amazonaws.com\/Images\/its-a-wonderful-life-martini-house.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"209\" \/>Back then, savers put money in local institutions where local bankers lent it out to local borrowers.\u00a0 It was very community focused.<\/p>\n<p>Today, everything funnels through Wall Street and the Federal Reserve, and the last few years have shown that when deals get made too far away from Main Street, weird stuff happens &#8211;\u00a0 like meltdowns and bailouts.<\/p>\n<p>But where can you store your cash, if not banks?\u00a0 Do you have any choice?<\/p>\n<p>Well, &#8220;Yes!&#8221;\u00a0 according to the authors of <a title=\"How Privatized Banking Really Works\" href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/threesgurash-20\/detail\/061532682X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>How Privatized Banking Really Works<\/em><\/a> (a book that we read, enjoyed and recommend).<\/p>\n<p>Privatized banking is a concept we&#8217;ve explored in previous episodes, so when the opportunity came along to sit down face to face with the authors, we happily grabbed it.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the old fashioned microphones for yet another informative episode you can bank on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your host with a wonderful life, <strong>Robert Helms<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Your co-host who needs to\u00a0 get a life, <strong>Russell Gray<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Special guest, economist and author, <strong>Robert Murphy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Special guest, management consultant and author, <strong>Carlos Lara<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems like everyone from Occupy Wall Street to Congress to the GOP presidential hopefuls (not to mention the millions of people without jobs or in foreclosure) have figured out that the banking system is broken &#8211; or at least not working very well.\u00a0 &#8220;Duh&#8221; as they say.<\/p>\n<p>And with all the rhetoric and finger pointing, it\u2019s easy to just throw up\u2026your hands, that is\u2026and say, \u201cWhat can I really do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, this episode isn\u2019t about overthrowing the Fed, prosecuting bankers, or protesting foreclosures.\u00a0 There are lots of people busily debating what needs to happen to fix the system.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the privatized, or &#8220;infinite&#8221; banking concept is really about \u201copting out\u201d of conventional banking &#8211; or at least, de-funding it to a large degree &#8211; not through legislation or litigation, but simply by personally using a little known alternative to banks for holding your cash.<\/p>\n<p>Sound radical?\u00a0 It really isn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s more about getting back to a &#8220;closer to home way&#8221;
